Covid cases have surged across several suburbs of Mumbai in the past few weeks, following a near-full reopening of the economy and disregard of safety measures such as the wearing of face masks and social distancing. The city recently logged 5,504 new infections - crossing 5,000 for the second day in a row - to post a new single-day high.

Mumbai’s densely populated suburb of Bhandup located in S Ward of Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) too is currently grappling with innumerable challenges to contain the rise of Covid cases. The current population of Bhandup suburb is estimated at around 9 lakh as communicated by BMC S Ward Assistant Municipal Commissioner Mr Vibhas Achrekar. “Fortunately, the team headed by health officer of BMC, Dr Vilas Mohokar is doing an excellent job to check the Covid spike and also inoculate the local citizens,” said Mr Achrekar.

BMC S Ward Corporator, Mrs Sakshi Deepak Dalvi said, “My aim is to speed up the inoculation process of senior citizens and people with comorbidities at Sushma Swaraj Maternity Government Hospital located in Bhandup West.”

Mr Manoj Kotak, Member of Parliament, Mumbai North East Constituency, said, “If required, our office will facilitate free transport to senior citizens to the nearest vaccination centre in my constituency. Inoculation of aged population and those with comorbidities is our utmost priority.”

Across Mumbai and especially in the suburb of Bhandup, the ‘lockdown fatigue’ amongst local citizens has perhaps resulted into carelessness, and also a sense of despair and recklessness. Indeed, earning livelihood should be of paramount importance for all citizens. However, their total disregard for safety protocols could lead to a catastrophic situation in the months to come.

Citizens, BMC administration and local politicians in S Ward should collaborate to increase the inoculation capacity at Covid vaccination centres in Bhandup.
